Mom, Mustangs and Memorial Day Weekend
By Alan Okami
So I finally did it. For those of you that have been following me on Ka Leo O Kalihi and Facebook, you are aware of my hemming and hawing over a Mustang. As a Kalihi blogger, I felt a moral obligation to send business over to Honolulu Ford, but things didn't work out well that way.

One last shout out to Honolulu Ford. My friend, master mechanic, Gary Gibo heads the service department there.

Then it was back to McKenna for my 3rd Ford from them in 2 years. The service is great and the deals are straight up.

Call braddah Eric Orinion to setup a deal for yourself. He's available at 266-7000.

And my new baby. Finding lost cars a safe and happy home is one of my hobbies. This is a 2010 Mustang GT. Memories of my 1988 5.0 Mustang LX. This one has everything I want and a few things I don't know how to use. I am sooooo happy. Little bit in the dog house with the Mrs right now though. I feel bad.

Memorial Day weekend also marked the birthday of my dear mom. We went to Suntory in the Royal Hawaiian Center.

Mom and pops digging into their vittles. They opted to go with more of the appetizers and rice set.

I decided to go with the sashimi/tempura teishoku. Meal started with a ponzu salad, ohitashi and this onolicious tofy thing. I still don't know what it was called, but want it again.

My meal was just as satisfying to eat as beautiful to look at. My sashimi came on a little dish filled with ice to keep my fish cold. The tempura crisp and light, everything perfect. With my 15 pound less body, the portions were just right. (Yes, I lost 15 lbs! yay!)
Hoping my wife stops being mad at me soon and I hope my appetite doesn't come back now that I got my car. I also promised not to chew tobacco as part of buying my car. Gone is that appetite supressant. (Neither the author of this blog or the Honolulu Advertiser advocate the usage of tobacco products. The surgeon general has found chewing tobacco to contribute to cancer growth)
Memorial Day, thank you all those that have served this wonderful country. It was a pretty good weekend to remember. I got to play with my sons, go out to eat every night, holo holo all over the place, buy a car and take my mom out to dinner. Hope your weekend was just as good as mine.

Congratulations Alan!
You deserve your new ride. This is for all the sacrifices you've made over the years for you, your family and your business, and continually giving to the community. As they say, "Good things, happen to good people."

Hi. I read a few of your other posts and wanted to know if you would be interested in exchanging blogroll links?
May 25th, 2009 at 10:04 pm
I don't think you have any obligation to give your business to Honolulu Ford just because they're in Kalihi. Give your local businesses a chance to earn your business, but if they don't earn it, go someplace that will.
No need feel guilty.

Congrats on the new ride!
May 26th, 2009 at 6:03 am
Yay, you got to new baby. Nice
What color is that, black? Hard to tell. Too much reflections or was that your glowing face that changed the color?
I dunno about H. Ford. This is not time to lose a sale. Give um what the customer wants within reasons and you make something from the sale. Kudos to McKenna to give you want you want.
No you need to figure out how to make da wife happy again. Stopping the chew is one way. And you may gain part of the 15 lbs back, but the benefits outweigh the negatives.
Congrats on Mom. You good boy to her.
Hamster D: You funny bruddah

Ed,
Thanks, wish my wife felt the same. Actually, she said I deserve it but that my timing sucks. I can understand what she's saying, but I'll admit I am going through midlife. Was pretty depressed for several months.
zzzzzz,
I have to agree with you. I just wanted to showcase the area's auto dealer. Tristin was very cool to me and initially swung for me a fantastic deal. That is, until 1 week later and Mr Manager stepped in. They eventually sold the car, so good for them.
Hamster D,
Thanks my friend. Guess what I got from Molokai? Ha ha ha! I guess you'll find out next bbq.
GA Bows,
Thank you. I love it. Re-captured that 18 year old boy buying his first Mustang back in 1988. This time, the boy has a little more kala now that he's older. Can afford gas now.
Ynaku,
Thanks my friend. My pops in law might know someone in your family. Ran your name by and he says sounds familiar. The ride is indeed black. That will be a challenge in rainy Nuuanu, but I'm always up for a good challenge.
B,
Mahalo. Wondering if it is really a bad boy or bad girl. Mean, but sooo sexy too.
Saw clips of Boy Scouts up at Punchbowl and reminded me of the days in Pack/Troop 215 in Pauoa. We used to go and set leis every year. I was going to volunteer at my old troop, but Scouts seem to be a dying thing. Only 3 boys last count.

I was just now googling around about this when I came upon your blog post. I'm just visiting to say that I really enjoyed seeing this post, it is very clear and well written. Are you thinking of blogging more about this? It looks like there's more depth here for future posts.

now you can drive around town with your MRS and maybe she will forgive you...next thing she will drive your car .... or she can come out with a FOUR WHEEL DRIVE towers over you!
May 27th, 2009 at 10:46 am
yes if my husband buys a truck I BE LIKE DID WE WIN OR SOMETHING..yes if my husband go with his midlife he better drive me around town slowly then go for lunch...so long as I don't have to work and pay for his midlife NO PROBLEM!

M,
As soon as my insurance card arrives, no problem. Put your seatbelt on though, this one does the 1/4 mile in 13.5 seconds. Little faster than my Sequoia and F150.
Rie,
Onolicious = very delicious. Thanks again, I'll tell my mom. Hope you are doing well this summer. Coming Hawaii soon?
Rosette,
Unfortunately, she probably won't be riding my car in a while. Was the same with my truck. Personal strike. Thanks for the well wishes. I got a ton of kissing up to do. Wish me luck and pray for me. Still VERY angry. My heart hurts, but I know I did wrong.

Congrats Al on the new ride. Even prouder of you for kicking the tobacco habit AND losing 15 pounds! That is cause for celebration. As a car enthusiast here, I can tell you I'd rather be behind the wheel than at the dinner table--even with gasoline being a bit steep, the waistline remains slimmer, the life expectancy creeps higher, and the time to savor the car grows longer too. Maybe it is time to discuss a new car for the Mrs?? I know a good Porsche dealer but you'd have to come to LA to pick it up! Now can we bum a ride to lunch at Stonegrill when we get into town?
May 27th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
Okay, the first time she gets in the car and has pilau feet/shoes/slippahs do not tell her, "Hemo dat! No make da insai pilau! Nu da baggah."
Else, the couch will feel comfortable after the first three weeks; and, you will be able to chill an entire warehouse of your favorite refreshments with the look.

I finally saw it!! Bruddah Eric told me to check your blog and there it is!

What is up with my comment awaiting moderation? Did my haole-fied pidgin mess up the filter?
May 28th, 2009 at 9:51 pm
Congrats on the new car! Woohoo! I wanna see next time!
Amazingly, I've never heard of Suntory and I LOVE Japanese food. I want to try there now. The food looks delicious!

Britney Paiva played for us members at Imiloa tonight. Awesome girl. Too bad she left before I could talk to her or pick up her latest CDs. Guess gotta go Borders laters.
May 29th, 2009 at 5:31 am
Have you checked out Jinroku? One block mauka of Hyatt--I think you and your `ohana would really love it.
May 29th, 2009 at 7:52 am
I don't get very well the concept here, so I believe people may disagree with it.
May 30th, 2009 at 10:13 am
Hi I'm Justin not everyday I come across a good article...keep up the good work.

Bruce,
Thanks, I would love to, but I am afraid that I am a total blog rookie. Later when I learn how, we can do the link thingy.
Sean GS Constuction,
Hey! How you guys doing? Borrow? Ha ha, I no even drive em myself. Get's the wife small kine mad.
How I lost 30 pound in 30 days,
I lost 15 pounds in 3 months. Keeping it off too. Thanks for stopping by.
Kawika,
Howzit my man! Of course we can go riding. To eat too no less, ha ha. The mrs is not a car lady. She could've got a X5, but passed on it. I was going to surprise her, but that probably would have made her more mad than happy.
Never went to Jinroku, must try it.
wafan,
The couch is amazingly comfortable. Ride em? Not for a while. When I got my F150 FX2, she neva ride em for one year. We'll see.
the moderation thingy has been funky, sorry.
Rosette,
Ahh the minivan. I bought one for my mom and almost pau pay for it. Not quite my Mustang though. Can carry way more peeps though, so it's all good.
Kelli,
Thanks. We go riding next time. Man I love it. Little hard to stay slow. All my cars since my 88 mustang and 87 Grand National have been slow mobiles. I went from the 88 stang to a 91 4Runner 4x4. Big adjustment, but at least I could go climbing the rocks at Kaena point and Alan Davis. Fun!
Ynaku,
Britt is a great girl. So bubbly and nice yeah? I'm sure you can catch her laterz.
Frederic,
Huh? Did you say something? I approved your comment just to add some parody. First time for me. Thanks for commenting in any case. I'll do some Kalihi soon, I promise.
Justin,
Mahalo. (see previous comment) Stay tuned, I got all kinds of stuff going on in this blog. It's blog about Kalihi, my efforts in Kalihi, the extensions we are involved in and of course, some of this Kalihi boy's life and adventures.
