Want to hear one of our secrets? It's actually getting out more, so it's more of a thing we don't talk about than a bonafide secret....."Nine and Four Hundred"

Nine years ago, we started off on what we projected to be a six year commitment. It all started with a call from Josh Adachi from the Molokai Youth Center. They were looking for a company to provide instruction on how to make ukuleles. We were quick to grab on to this and one thing lead to another and it grew to the point where we decided to:

1. Provide our own ukuleles as kits
2. Pay our own way there
3. Volunteer our time
4. Take the entire company

We missed last year due to a hectic travel schedule as well as once in 2008, but we haven't missed a single child since the inception in 2004. We doubled up on the years we missed. 2013 marks our 9th year and here's how it went:

This year was no different from others, the entire team made it out to the Friendly Isle. This is probably the most anticipated one of all our travels each year.

Mahalo nui loa to Michael Drew and the ohana of Hotel Molokai as they have been hosting our groups each year since 2006. It helps us a lot.

The after workshops views are pretty good too. We made our daily rounds to the pool and washed off all the dust from the workshops. Not to mention, Molokai is HOT! So the pool was a literal oasis.

But of course the reasons why we were there is right here in the picture, all 70 reasons.

A little bit of sanding, gluing, assembling and oiling - then voila! We packed the entire cafeteria for this build. It was the first time we did this many kits. The previous record was about 43 of them. As for the results.....

Well I'd say this guy looks pretty excited about making his own KoAloha Ukulele, would you agree?

Most of our morning were spent at Kanemitsu Bakery. I had to depart from my low carb menu and went with this every morning, loco moco w fried rice. Don't be sad for me, it was ono!

We also try to make a short 10 minute trek up the hill to Kualapuu, where Kualapuu Cookhouse is. These folks are amazing.

I opted for the steak. Was more like a side of beef. Was so huge that it practically covered my entire plate. So so good!

Molokai is a double edged sword. Many think we are the ones bringing something of value there. In our eyes, we are the ones that walk away with more. The place is a reminder of how Hawaii used to be. It's taking a step back in time where people helped one another without expecting anything in return. A time when no one locked their house doors.

The island is often the brunt of economic jokes which lights our fire even more. We should all be helping one another to make this short life just even a little bit better. It's fair to say that many of the families would not be able to afford the ukulele we build there, but that depends on how you measure paying. We were showered with home made goodies in baskets that overflowed. They all tasted incredible. After all, they gave what they could and money can't buy that.

So we broke our promise. We went back after we completed the first six years. At nine years, we've broken that intent three times. 400 instruments later, we don't have any issues breaking our word again next year. Mahalo ke Akua, we are the ones that are blessed.

Hard to believe I was once quiet. Nowadays, I talk a lot. In fact, it's my job to do so. Gone are the days when my pops chided me by saying, "You are so anti-social and always look angry. It's terrible. you need to learn how to speak!" Famous last words, ha ha. Boy does he regret that now. Can't get me to be quiet now....

One of the more rewarding things about what I do now is to be invited as a speaker for various engagements. I've presented to career days at primary schools, a high school and most recently, a career development assembly and college.

With a view like this, it's hard to think that this is some kind of work or something like that. Lucky we live Hawaii I tell you. This is the view from St Louis Heights, Chaminade campus. Didn't realize that they had an observatory.

The view includes a panoramic view of Palolo Valley. It's amazing to see it all from this vantage point.

You can also see Diamond Head in the distance. I was amazed at the clear view as we been having a lot of vog lately. I'm super happy that I was able to take these shots.

Then I went to work. These are the young men and women that are part of the Hogan Entrepreneur Program at Chaminade.

The Hogan program is designed to create future leaders, regardless of the work sector that you are in. They bring in presenters from all walks of life and professions to share of their experiences with the group. Supporters include many of the high society in Honolulu and I was amazed to learn of the calibre of speakers that have passed through their doors.

From my notes, I think one of the best things I share with them is to dream. Not only to dream, but to dream big. The biggest obstacle in place is fear of failure as we think about all the people watching us, measuring each step we take. "Embrace failure" I told them. "It's your friend". There's a reason I shared this:

Fear comes in as most don't dare to dream. We don't want to look like fools if we can't achieve our goals. What is often underestimated is the positive impact of failure. It's the best teacher, because it hurts. Hurts in many ways. Failure dictates change. It screams for course corrections, self examination and calls for improvement on what we are doing and how we behave. Embrace failure my friends as long as you don't linger there. Success may be just a corner away.

Let me start out by saying I'm not really a celebrity chaser. I'm a chaser of good people. That counts way more in my book. If they're famous, that's just a thing about them. I rather have quality. Nevertheless, we do meet a bunch of famous people and I want to share some of the real ones with you. The ones that aren't just well know, they're people that I am happy to have met and spent a little time, or better yet, became friends with.

Being the aggressive marketing company that we are, we've spent a lot so mornings on local TV. I'm so happy that the call time isn't 4:00 am anymore these days.

While he has yet to follow me back on Twitter (he promised), Howard Dicus isn't just a walking encyclopedia. He's been wonderful supporting a lot of the human interest stories that we are involved with such as Hawaii Youth Symphony and Peacebridge (Schofield Barracks Wolfhounds) to name a couple. He's always willing to help us share the message of goodwill and the arts.

Oh my goodness this one might be my favorite one. Olena Heu is not only a former beauty queen, she's just as beautiful on the inside. She's one that engages you with genuine interest. She doesn't have the hi makamaka attitude that some on air personalities have. As for heart, she's a sweetie. So tender and caring, one that's truly invested into the people and stories she shares. I'm a fan.

Poi Boys! Poi Boys! If you know what I'm talking about, 'scuze me...your age is showing, ha ha. The legendary promoter extraordinaire, Uncle Tom Moffat. He's a great guy and has come out to support us at some of the events we've had. He's soft spoken and a true gentleman.

Had to include this handsome Hawaiian man. Nathan Aweau, owner of the "voice". OMG, I had to sing after him once when we had a small private event. I should've read a poem instead...... Nathan has supported some of our charitable events pro bono. Keep this in mind as he needs to travel and perform to earn a living. Coming up this fall, he's rearranged his schedule to do another freebie in Japan for tsunami relief at Herb Ohta Jr's Ohana Festival in Japan.

Another age test, remember Tiger Beat magazine? Then you're bound to remember guitar god, Peter Frampton. This guy is a hit! While he's famous and all that, he doesn't act that way. Proud to say he's a KoAloha owner.

Nest stop, Margaritaville. The man himself, Jimmy Buffet. Margaritaville is one of the most successful brands. What they sell and how they do it are beyond me. I just know that Jimmy is the most down to earth famous person that I know, along with the likes of slipper wearing Jack Johnson (another fantastic guy). Jimmy flies his own private jets, just one detail unknown to most. His favorite is a C-130 cargo jet, not the learjet. Wow. I'm fortunate to say he's loosely agreed to be one of my mentors. "I'll help ya whatever I can Al, but I don't know if I qualify as a mentor" was his words. Qualified? My goodness, just his name earns more money than what my house is worth.

Asia's Sexiest Magician. Magic Babe Ning, pictured with my other buddy from Singapore, the media mogul Pam Ho. Ning is famous, she's sexy and successful, but she doesn't act that way. She behaves like an everyday girl, just having fun while doing what she loves. There are no stiletto heels or powdery makeup when you hang out with her, it's just Ning. And that's more than enough. She's awesome!

I don't want to spew out a list, because in truth, we've met a hella lot of famous folks. I guess it's part of our job's nature. Not really important to me. Like I said, it's about the person and who they are, not who they are. Is that confusing? I'd rather have a new friend than a picture of someone that will forget me in the following five seconds. Lucky to say that I have made a lot of good friends, famous and not.

I'm lucky. Despite my moaning and groaning (Facebook and Twitter), I'm very blessed to be able to travel this world of ours. To my delight, we were able to stay within the United States in the opening of the year. No more calculating how much things cost, no money converters and no jet lag. Whew! Let's take a peek into our company wide trip to NAMM.

When traveling to NAMM (North American Music Manf) we always stay with our friends at Ramada Maingate on Harbor Blvd. We are neighbors with Disneyland there. And it's really convenient to live right next to Denny's as well.

But this trip really wasn't about NAMM. It was a "thank you" to my crew for working so hard in 2012, so we took them on an all expense paid trip to Anaheim for the bonding that we missed out on a little last year as we outfitted the factory in Thailand. So, Disneyland here we came!

Of course tradition kicks in and we drive over to Newport, THE Joe's Crab Shack as far as we're concerned. There are others, but this one is THE one. It's a must do for us each time we go to Cali.

We love their famous steam pots, but we also fell in love with the atmosphere. They're a bunch of fun loving folks that will gladly play along with whatever hijinx you might have in mind. Here's Dustin becoming one of the victims of the night. We actually staged a company wide prank as my brother and I had a fake drinking contest. (we were the designated drivers). I got the bartender to serve us fake drinks, so we weren't drunk. We just acted that way. Guys were sweating. Yes, I know bad joke, but I'm being transparent. We're brutal at work.

What trip to the West Coast would be complete without a trip to In & Out? Not ours, so we went there.

Here is our duty as Americans. Nuff said

We also went to California Adventure where we spotted some VH07V. Rides and coasters? Of course we did. Love the Hollywood Haunted Tower. Just love it!

We even got to meet Disney's Brother Bear........oops!

Tradition can be a good thing, especially when it involves Los Sanchez. Judging by how many Latinos eat there, we know we're in good hands.

The menu stretched across the entire place and whatever you feel like feating on, chances are they have it. Providing it's Mexican of course.

Mine was huevos con chorizo, one of my favorite dishes. If not this, I'll usually go for tamales.

NAMM, no NAMM, doesn't matter for me. I got to hang out with my guys and enjoy one of the trips we use to bond with one another. It's good times away from home and work. We claim to be family and this kind of trip brings us closer to one another. The way it should be. One big ohana, and as Lilo & Stitch say, "Ohana means family, and family means no one gets left behind"

Funny thing. I enjoy the perks of modern society. It would be hard to live without my computer, iphone and many of life's new conveniences, yet, it's hard to let go of the past at times. This is especially true when they are fond memories. Let's take a walk down memory lane (one of the early Ka Leo themes) and see what we can remember together.

Went to Sears this weekend and had a lot of memories of this place. They were the first to get Ala Moana started back in 1959 in what was the largest shopping mall in the world. Remember this front facade? Walking in the auto service center side, I would love to eat at their coffee shop. My uncle was hard at work in automotive and my attention quickly got caught by the smell of fresh popcorn at the candy counter. This was always accompanied by the aroma of roasted cashews and the place couldn't have smelled any better to a little boy like me.

Then of course there was the "fancy" place, Liberty House. I would love to get clothes there, but a lot of mine were from GEM department store. Shoes were from Sears, most times Kenner brand. Longs Drugs provided the kamaboko slippers. Liberty House was high end to my family, but still had that local owned and Hawaii feeling. Now Macy's is there. Nice store, good return policy, but I miss the ole LH.

Most of my vivid recollections are from the 70's when I was an elementary school student and what more iconic than these? Tell me you didn't have a pair.... I got mine from Liberty House and it was a prize possession. Only got taken out when we had some kind of thing going on at school or when we went out to a party or dinner.

Thought I forgot huh? No ways! Everyone knows that this was THE pants to wear with your Famolares. The ever famous Angel Flights. The bigger the bottom, the more creds you got. Talk about fashion "flare". The temperature seemed cooler back then, but the velour shirts were still pretty hot. Solid color or one stripe across the chest while Michael Jackson's "Off the Wall" album played in the hallways. BeeGees were there too along with Donna Summer, Lipps Inc, KC and the Sunshine Band, Nick Gilder & Patrick Hernandez to name a few. What groups do you remember?

Then we started to head into a different decade. Enter Members Only jackets. I had this exact color. Wanted black or blue, but McInerney was pretty sold out and I wanted one badly. Brain shift! Remember Mcinerney turning into Guava Lane? 80's flashback.

This post is not solely about Ala Moana, but it was a big part of my life growing up. It was a place to hang out, check out chicks and see more than a family member or friend while you were there. It was OUR place as Hawaiians. Things have changed. I would be lucky to know even 25% of the store names now, which reminds me of what once was there:

Singer - my cousins would go for sewing lessons every summer
Iida's - tons of stuff from Japan. Used to think it was a grandma store, but I miss it now
Carol and Mary - my aunty retired there. Miss you aunty Dot
Keikiland - Oh how I loved this place, but money was tight, so I didn't go often
Woolworth - anybody making that fried chicken nowadays?
JC Penny - hot dog for breakfast at their coffee shop

Help me keep these memories alive. Tell about your memories and what you miss. Progress is good, but it's good to remember the past. It's a part of us and something that development can't take away.

Some 20 or so trips lat year and we're finally getting to spend some time here at home. For pockets here and there in any case. Our business and planning is still taking us all over the place though. All in all, I'm grateful as I'm getting to see this great big wonderful world we live in. This post is just random shots of some of the places we've been. Hope you all enjoy.

Thailand, Thailand, Thailand, I'm sure you Ka Leo faithful know how much we were there in 2012. We can finally disclose the reason as we were there was for business in the making.

"GET OFF THE FORKLIFT!!!!!" That's how I started my day this particular shot. We were unloading a container in Thailand of precious cargo and my instructions were very specific. I would unload it. We went through the storm to get this container filled. If anyone, I would be the one to drop something, not someone else....

Cargo: equipment to outfit a factory.

We worked with a dear friend and his team to setup a factory for KoAloha. They are independent of us, but operate a factory that's identical to ours. They will be producing our overseas manufactured KoAloha Opio models shortly. Exciting to see them get going from the ground up.

Here's our first shipment last year when they were labeled as KoAlana, our entry level line. The quality is sooo good that we decided to give them the KoAloha name, heading into the future.

But it wasn't all Thailand. Korea....ahhh. We did a tour there, stopping in Busan, Daejeon and Seoul. The women's university in Busan showed off their hula stuff as they joined us onstage for that night's performances.

Here's a shot from eating on the waterfront. It was a calm, picturesque night. The kind of setting that you see on postcards.

It may not look fancy, but have you ever had duck bulgogi? This is OMG calibre! The duck is marinated in a special sauce, mix veggies in and it starts filling the room and tummies with absolute delight. When most of the meat and veggies are gone, the nice lady comes and fries rice in the oils. Heaven!

And Thailand wasn't all factory. We did a couple tours there as well. This one was a film screening in Bangkok that featured performances by Ohta San and Herb Ohta Jr.

Din Tai Fung. Soup filled yum cha goodness. You didn't think I would post a blog without at least a couple food pix right? This place was amazing.

There are more travels this year and I'll be sure to make more posts and take you all along with us as we try to spread our brand of Aloha with the world. Thanks for hanging with me. More to come.

There are times, as a blogger, that I wonder if my content has any impact at all. Writing is fun, but is the pen truly mightier than the sword? Do I write for the sake of sensationalism? Am I here just to entertain or feed my own ego as an esteemed "blogger"?

Then, there are times that I WANT to write, driven by inspiration. The intangible aspect of preaching to the invisible choir, in hopes of touching a life or two. Such is the case in my reflections of Hiroyo Klink.

Media Etc., our local powerhouse consultants of Japanese Media relations and PR. This is one of their out of the park Christmas Cards, the inspiration behind what makes ours so unique. For many years, they have been largely responsible for putting KoAloha on the Japanese map. Thanks to these ladies, we have been in EVERYTHING! Chihiro, Hiroyo, Toshie, Yuko and Mutsumi make the most delightful and effective team.

Just like us at our shop, the good times roll here as the ladies truly enjoy the company of one another. Here they are, pictured with some good friends from Japan. The surfboards are not props, the ladies all have some kind of hobby or activity that follows them all the way to the office.

Those of you who have been following the story, Hiroyo's son, Leo, was met with jubilation and grief this past week. He had reached the highest high, playing the part of hero in the Hawaii State Championship soccer match, only to be met with absolute sorrow. Before the closing of the game, Hiroyo suffered from a clot to her brain. She demanded that Leo did not find out about this until the end of the game. She was whisked away from the field, not witnessing her son pull off his game winning goal. Three days later, she left this world the gifts of her organs as life support was disconnected.

My last contact with Hiroyo was being the recipient of a gift from her. It was large and something completely unexpected. That seems to be the pattern with her and her lady friends. Just when you think they can't get any more giving, they do. It could easily be said that her last gift to Leo was his perfect game, but as any mother would have, I'm sure she would want to give much more than that, and indeed she does. Her dream lives on:

Hiroyo's desire is to have Leo attend college. As a single mother, not an easy task.

It's not often that I make a plea, but please help me make this mother's dream come to pass. There are many causes, but this one hits close to home, and home is where your heart is. Leo, if you read this, mom is still looking out for you. Now she does it through her friends. Thank you for sharing your mom with all of us.

Two ways to keep the dream alive:

Ahh, 2013. I've been able to enjoy long stretches here at home for the first time, dating back to November 2011. Life has been busy and mostly on the road. Not sure if I mentioned it, but I took 19-20 trips last year. Worst part is that I don't even have enough miles to upgrade. I suppose that's the penalty of procrastination in mileage enrollment.

Of course this means that I'm heading to some good eats. But not before getting to work. Remember Snow White? I'd put those dwarves to shame. Hi ho, hi ho,......actually, I'm always working....sigh

First thing back, I got to wear some special clothes. Tool belt and all.

Took off a door and sanded it clean. By the way, 50 year old stain doesn't cooperate well. It likes to stay on the door.

Sanded even more stain off of four redwood walls. (please refer to my earlier statement about stain) and started laying the laminate flooring.

Two sanders, 60 sheets of sanding discs, nine boxes of flooring, eight hours, two sore knees and a wrenched back later, I was done! Well, actually I wasn't. The trim and baseboard needed to be installed as well.

Reward to self, a trip to one of my favorite places in Kalihi. The eatery is simply named, "The Pastele Shop", pronounced "Pah-tey-leh" for you rookies, ha ha.

Their menu is simple, but oh so good. The moment you walk in, the Puerto Rican spices fill the air and I know that I'm one step closer to Heaven.

At the counter, you get teased by their fried chicken, lumpia and turnovers. Don't let them tease you! Just buy some. The owner tells me, "Our fried chicken is good, you know?" and I agree with my whole heart and mouth full.

Then on to the star of the show, the pasteles. This is a combination plate of pastele, gandule rice and bakalao salad. The picture did not look this way for long. More like an empty plate.

It's a cozy mom and pops operation and delivers up comfort and food for the soul. Did I mention that I love this place?

We had a terrific time there, meeting new friends and all the festivities that surrounded the Film Festival, but you know me. Where there is food, I will go. Like I mentioned, I was hungry for American fare. Tony Luke's was not letdown I tell you. They are known for their Philly Cheese Steaks. OMG calibre! It's one of those "you gotta try it for yourself" things.

OK, back to business. For now anyways. Look who's on the flyers, it's another one of our buddies, Herb Ohta Jr.
We rounded out our visit to the east coast in New Jersey. Daniel was scheduled for a workshop, concert and mini performance with the folks from Mainstage Center for the Arts. Ed Fiscella and crew do a knock out job of keeping the arts available to the youth of NJ.
It was fun to make even more friends and we event got an impromptu hula session going. Of course the people there were really mellow, so I needed to offer KoAloha tshirts as incentive.
Our reward for a job well done was a trip to Alfred's. They serve up wonderful "tomato pies", not pizza. At least not according to the previous owner who would just about kick you out if you called them pizzas.
At the end of it all, I was really happy how this trip turned out. It was my very first time to the east coast and I enjoyed it immensely. I will admit I was tuckered out too though.

As promised, I'll try to keep the posts coming this year. Definitely more to come as I have pictures and stories galore. Not to mention, more travels.

Happy New Year everyone! Welcome back to another year of my life, travels and adventures. 2012 was quite the year, with me gone from Hawaii for about half of the time. It's great to be on Hawaiian soil for a change. I'm gonna try to keep more posts coming and also hope to figure out how I can comment on my OWN blog, go figure, ha ha.

Let's pick up where we left off in Singapore and Japan. As I mentioned, was quite the year and I am very blessed to be able to travel the world as my business takes me there.

After Singapore, we had some business in Osaka and that means we're gonna look up our friend and his restaurant.

They are an "ezakaya" style, or bar/grill type place, in the Japanese way. Husband and wife team are unreal and it's co cozy that we couldn't help but fall in love with them.

Here are just two of the delicious items we ordered. Was hard to stop ordering as everything was fantastic.

OK, couldn't just post 2 pix. That wouldn't do justice to their menu. Look at the rich broth and the succulent onigiri (rice ball) in dashi (soup base) I have to say that it was OMG calibre.

This is the husband and wife team that makes the magic happen.

And of course the "other" reason we go there is the amazing sake. These are types I've never seen, heard of or tasted before. He is our Facebook friend and since I can't read Japanese, I don't even know his name. We simply call him "friend". Love the guy. He even share with us some if his private stash that he searches Japan for, combing through cities big and small. He is a master at his craft.

Not to pump up booze too much, but he IS amazing. Like a sushi chef, he watches how you drink and will serve you omakase style. That means he will pair for you the sake and food if you trust his judgement. In the two times we've been there, I've been blown away each time.

We had a business meeting there, but also went to visit one of our dealers there, where the staff is always so friendly to us. Osaka is a great town.

And just like Hawaii, I can't seem to go anywhere without being spotted. In the most obscure, hidden away 7-11, we ran into one of our friends. He plays ukulele in the popular Japanese Duo, Fulare Pad. They were on the same trip as us to Cairns last year.

But of course the highlight of my trip was to visit my favorite place in Osaka, The Holy Family Home. The board I serve on works with them as a supportive arm of the Schofield Barracks Wolfhounds. The longest lasting tradition/relationship in the history of the US Army.

We sang and danced for the kids, they sang and danced for us, was a wonderful time. But.....

My brother Paul stole the show as he was the pied piper. He was the focal point as he was the leader of group games. That was the REAL thing that the kids enjoyed. I could only watch with a few tears welling up in my eyes, thinking to myself, "If only for a few hours, we are the ones blessed. To be able to share what we can with these children. Lord, bless my business so that we can make more of an impact and touch the heart of this world."

2013 is here and it's going to be a good one. Our motto at work is "Unlike Any Other Year" It's a promise, a goal and commitment.
